Finland, the world’s happiest country, has unveiled an enticing destination that will whisk you off the digital grid. Introducing Ulko-Tammio, the world’s first phone-free travel spot that promises a complete disconnection from your electronic devices.
Nestled among Finland’s 41 national parks, Ulko-Tammio is also known as the Jewel of the Eastern Gulf of Finland. This largely uninhabited island is a haven for rare bird and plant species. Its bird-watching tower, rugged cliffs, and well-marked hiking trails are perfect for adventure and nature lovers. It’s the ideal refuge for those yearning to break free from the virtual world.
Why Go Phone-Free In Ulko-Tammio?
Besides the lush landscapes and breathtaking views, visitors can explore a cave that served as a shelter during World War II. During the exploration, you’ll also encounter two cannons that bear witness to the island’s military history. For a unique phone-free experience, Parks & Wildlife Finland maintains a cozy cabin and a camping area where travelers can spend the night.
Mats Selin, an island tourism expert at Visit Kotka-Hamina, emphasized the initiative’s aim to inspire vacationers to power down their devices. By doing so, visitors can genuinely savor the island’s wonders, as reported by CNN. Bid farewell to your phone, social media, and work emails. Instead, Finland wants visitors to embrace the opportunity to relax in harmony with nature, wildlife, and fellow explorers.
A digital detox on Ulko-Tammio can help reduce anxiety and depression by engaging with nature and other human beings. However, while the initiative promotes a phone-free experience, it remains optional for tourists. The island still boasts full mobile network coverage for those who need it.
Joel Heino, Manager of Parks & Wildlife Finland, expressed enthusiasm for the project. “We encourage visitors to put their phones away voluntarily and to focus their senses on nature rather than on their phones. This is a great initiative that could be implemented in other natural and recreational destinations, too,” according to a news release.
