*Denzel Washington may reprise his character in a sequel to the 1999 crime thriller “The Bone Collector,” co-starring Angelina Jolie.
Based on the 1997 novel of the same name by Jeffrey Deaver, the film stars Washington as a quadriplegic and veteran New York detective tasked with consulting on a string of murders. Directed by Phillip Noyce, “The Bone Collector” is currently streaming on Peacock.
Noyce told Syfy he was adamant about Washington playing the role of Lincoln Rhyme and casting a then-unknown Jolie as beat cop Amelia Donaghy.
“What I thought would distinguish the film would be fine acting,” he said.
“In my view, they were two wounded, crippled people,” said screenwriter Jeremy Iacone. “He was physically crippled and she was emotionally crippled. I thought the thematic underpinning [of] these heinous murders would bring these two people together and they would heal in some way.”
“The Bone Collector” grossed over $150 million against a $48 million production budget, according to Giant Freakin’ Robot.
Here’s more from the outlet:
Considering that — and that Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie are both decades older than they were when they made the first film — it seems unlikely The Bone Collector 2 would be adapted from one of the earlier books.
In 2014 The Skin Collector, the 11th book in Deaver’s series, was published. While there were nine other books between it and the first Lincoln Rhyme novel, Deaver told TheWrap The Skin Collector was meant to be more of a direct sequel to The Bone Collector. That would seem to make it a perfect contender for The Bone Collector 2, particularly considering rather than something like Coffin Dance or The Empty Chair, The Skin Collector is meant to take place quite a few years after the events of the first novel.
There have been 13 more Lincoln Rhyme mysteries published since 1997. NBC revived the character for a television series that aired in 2020 and ran for a single season.
“I spoke to the makers and I said, ‘Okay, I’ll make the pilot, but this is what I’d be looking to do.’ They made their pilot, but they made the most basic mistakes in their casting,” said Noyce, who briefly consulted on the project, in his SyFy interview. “They [also] tried to lighten it, which was not the way to exploit that material.”
