There are at least 10 shows that are on TV now that you’ve gotta watch. Everyone’s got a list. Everyone loves to recommend shows. I know I do. Some of these you may have seen, some you may have not seen. I don’t know what you’ve seen so if you’ve already seen it then we probably agree that you should’ve seen it. Anyway, if we were talking at a party, and you said what should I be watching, this is what I’d talk about. Presented in no particular order.
1. “Black Mirror” (Netflix): This is probably the best show on TV now. It’s brilliant, often frightening, dystopian, technological and unlike anything else. Each episode is like a little movie. “Black Mirror” is one of those shows where after you watch it you start to see the world differently, you start to say, oh wow, that’s like a “Black Mirror” episode. It bends your mind. The new season has an incredible episode starring Zazie Beetz called “Mazey Day.”
2. “Severance” (Apple TV+): I like mind-trippy shows and here’s another. This dramedy about life in a bizarre office environment is the perfect metaphor for a world where society is in the midst of a conversation about what level of importance work should take in our lives and how much we’re expected to give to the companies that employ us and what having a work/life balance really means.
3. “The Bear” (FX): A gritty show about life in the kitchen of a beloved Chicago restaurant. It makes you feel like you’re in the midst of the chaos of keeping a restaurant afloat while trying to maintain a sense of culinary authenticity.
4. “Dave” (FX): An amazingly hysterical parody of the life of a white rapper. I love this show. From the studio to the stage, “Dave” always finds brilliant ways to talk about what it’s like to be a rapper in the modern world.
5. “Random Acts of Flyness” (Max): The Blackest TV show ever made. There’s a sense of Blackness in this show that is beautiful. In the first moments of the first episode, a boy on a bike is stopped by a cop. The boy’s response? To fly off into the air. As soon as I saw that bit of magic realism I was hooked.
6. “Sherman’s Showcase” (Hulu): A parody of “Soul Train” and other Black shows from the ’70s.
7. “Beef” (Netflix): A man and a woman almost collide in a parking lot. That small moment launches them into an insane all-out war that changes their lives. If you like seeing two angry people trying to destroy each other, this show is it.
8. “Swarm” (Amazon Prime): Donald Glover’s gritty, horror-ish show is about a young sister who’s willing to do anything to see her favorite singer. Even murder. Dominique Fishback is the star and she’s extraordinary.
9. “Jury Duty” (Amazon Prime): This is a reality show about a group of people who are on a jury in a civil trial. The thing is, there’s only one person on the show who doesn’t know that it’s a reality show. It’s fun watching the actors play out the charade and watching the crew tap dance to figure out how to keep the charade going.
10. “Euphoria” (Max): Zendaya’s show is one of the very best shows in modern TV. It’s a wild ride through the world of an insane high school.
