*Boots Riley (Sorry to Bother You) is back with the highly anticipated mythical coming-of-age comedy “I’m A Virgo,” starring Emmy-winning actor Jharrel Jerome (When They See Us, Moonlight).
The seven-episode Prime Video series centers on “Cootie (Jerome), a 13-foot-tall young Black man in Oakland, California. Having grown up hidden away, passing time on a diet of comic books and TV shows, he escapes to experience the beauty and contradictions of the real world. He forms friendships, finds love, navigates awkward situations, and encounters his idol, a real-life superhero named The Hero, played by Walton Goggins (The Hateful Eight, The Righteous Gemstones). I’m A Virgo is a mythical odyssey that questions the purpose of the mythical odyssey,” per the synopsis.
Riley created, wrote, and executive produced the series and Jerome serves as an executive producer.
“I’m A Virgo” also stars Brett Gray, Kara Young, Allius Barnes, Olivia Washington, Mike Epps, and Carmen Ejogo.
Speaking to Screen Rant ahead of the show’s premiere, Jerome explained what made him want to be both a star and executive producer on this project.
“Yeah, Boots emailed me personally, and the title of the email said, “13-foot-tall Black man in Oakland.” I think if you read that, no matter who you are, you’re intrigued and you’re curious as to what that means. So, we sat down for lunch maybe a week later, and he painted the whole vision, and my jaw was to the floor,” Jerome explained to the outlet.
“I was just amazed at not only how creative the idea was, but the way he wanted to execute it, which was forced perspective, and very technical, and very real, and authentic. When you get somebody like Boots in front of you, all you know is that it’s about to be strong, important work, and it’s going to be a challenge, so that all just excited me to keep going with it,” he added.
Jermone spoke further on what he’s most excited about viewers experiencing when “I’m A Virgo” premieres June 23 on Prime Video. Watch our exclusive conversation with him via the clip below.
