*John Amos’ “Good Times” co-star BernNadette Stanis is publicly sharing her support for the TV star amid allegations of elder abuse.
As we reported … Amos was hospitalized last month after allegedly suffering “elder abuse and financial exploitation,” at the hands of a caregiver, according to his daughter Shannon Amos. She claims the 83-year-old was placed in intensive care but did not disclose what exactly happened to him.
Shannon set up a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for her ailing father.
“To catch and prosecute the alleged perpetrators, we now require legal assistance, hoping they face the full weight of the law,” the campaign reads. “Meanwhile, our priority remains my father’s medical needs and providing him a safe haven. His home had been violated, stripped of anything valuable. The cruelty inflicted upon my dad leaves me questioning what kind of human could commit such acts.”
John told TMZ that “the details laid out by his daughter Shannon Amos are a lie…no one is abusing him and he hasn’t been fighting for his life.”
Stanis cited the difficulties of caring for an aging parent in an exclusive interview with People.
“John knows I love him from the core of my heart,” the actress said. “His children were lovely and have always been lovely. It just happened so that when you have a parent that you have to take care of or they’re aging, there’s a lot of fear amongst the siblings because you don’t know — it’s the first time and maybe the only parent. It hurts.”
Shannon posted to Instagram on June 8 that she reported the possible elder abuse crime to Colorado authorities. The Colorado Bureau of Investigations launched an investigation into the claim. A video of John speaking on the phone from a hospital bed, circulated by his son K.C., accuses Shannon of elder abuse.
In Stanis’ opinion, disagreements among family members may have been blown “a little out of proportion.”
“I don’t understand the Shannon thing or what’s going on with it, but she’s the oldest and sometimes the oldest feels like they should be in control. But K.C. is the boy, so it could be a tug of war, a little bit like that.”
Stanis also noted that John, “looks fabulous every time I see him. The kids are fine.”
“He’s taking care of his children,” she continued. “And he has to understand that they’re both sad that their parent is in the hospital. Sometimes feelings come up, and things are said that don’t mean anything. Individuals hurting, you know. That’s what I think is going on. I think everything will be settled.”
