*R&B superstar H.E.R. is gushing about her role as Belle in ABC’s “Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration,” which aired in December.
“I can’t believe I get to be a part of the Beauty and the Beast legacy. The world will see a Black and Filipino Belle!” the Grammy-winning artist previously said, as reported by Revolt.
“I have always wanted to be a Disney princess,” she added.
Asked by TheWrap how she came to become involved with the 30th anniversary “Beauty and the Beast,” H.E.R. explained: “Oh man, it’s so crazy how time flies. I had a conversation with [producer and “Crazy Rich Asians” director Jon M. Chu] and he was so over-the-moon excited about the project and the vision for it. And he told me that they wanted me to play Belle. I’m a huge, huge, huge Disney fan and a Disney princess fan. I have always wanted to be a Disney princess.”

She also shared her process of bringing her version of Belle to life.
“I never imagined that I could be Belle. And to be Black and Filipino [in the role] is really, really cool. It brought a whole different representation to her. One thing I did is I put the traditional Filipino alphabet into my costume [apron] in the opening number and it went viral on TikTok. But I also just wanted to bring out her bravery and her strength and ability to see the good in everything,” the musician told TheWrap in a new interview.
When H.E.R. appeared on GMA to promote the project, she noted that she “never thought I could be a Disney princess” due to having grown up never seeing a Disney princess that “looks like her.”
“Of course, every little girl wants to be a Disney princess, but I’ve never seen one that looks like me — so I get to be that to little girls now,” she added.
