*A Texas grand jury has charged Patrick Xavier Clark, also known as DJ Pat, for the 2022 killing of Migos rapper Takeoff.
Clark was indicted on murder charges on May 25. In a statement to TMZ, his attorney, Carl Moore said, “Today’s action by the grand jury is not unexpected.”
Moore continued, “We would ask people to remember that getting an indictment requires meeting a very, very minimal standard of proof. When we get inside a courtroom and in front of a jury, where we will be able to put on our evidence and cross-examine the state’s witnesses— where the standard of proof is guilt beyond a reasonable doubt— we expect the jury will come back with a verdict of not guilty.”
We reported previously via CNN, Takeoff was an innocent bystander to an argument that took place outside a bowling alley in November that led to the shooting, according to police. He was unarmed and not involved in the argument. Takeoff was shot in the head and the torso, according to the coroner’s report.
“There was a lucrative dice game that went on at the event. There was an argument that happened afterwards outside the bowling alley, which led to the shooting,” HPD Homicide Division Sgt. Michael Burrow said previously. “I can tell you that Takeoff was not involved in playing in the dice game, he was not involved in the argument that happened outside. He was not armed.”
Clark was arrested by Houston PD in December on suspicion of shooting the victim. A court later granted Clark’s motion to hire a P.I. to help clear his name and prove his innocence.
After the shooting, Clark allegedly “applied for an expedited passport by submitting a travel itinerary for an upcoming flight to Mexico,” per court documents as reported by Fox 5 Atlanta.
It remains unclear if Clark was invited to the private party where Takeoff was shot or if he knew the artist personally. When asked if Clark and Takeoff were acquainted, Letitia Quinones, one of Clark’s attorneys, told reporters at a hearing in December, “We really don’t want to go into the facts at this point.”
Quinones also denied reports that Clark was trying to flee the country after the shooting.
In early January, Clark posted a $1 million bond and was released from the Harris County Jail.
