In a delightful twist of fate, Halle found herself juggling auditions and film sets.
While immersed in the enchanting world of Ariel and The Little Mermaid in London, the “Do It” singer she received an unexpected audition request for the highly anticipated musical film adaptation of The Color Purple. she poured her soul into a self-taped audition for the role of young Nettie, the younger sister of the film’s protagonist Celie, portrayed by R&B singer and actress Fantasia Barrino, who had previously graced the Broadway stage in the same role.
The universe aligned in her favor, as shortly after wrapping up filming for The Little Mermaid, she received the exhilarating news that she had clinched the coveted role in The Color Purple.
“I’m working with legends who I’m such fans of, like Fantasia and Taraji P. Henson,” she told the publication. Likening the set to a family reunion, she appreciated the respite of having a smaller role than in The Little Mermaid. “Also, I got to be country and talk in my Georgia, Southern accent, which was fun for me.” She went into the project with understandable nerves—“the first one is so iconic you almost don’t want to touch something as precious as that, and the same with Mermaid,” she said—but is pleased with the outcome. “I think people will be really proud of the new version.”
Halle has learned to navigate the attention that comes with being in the entertainment industry. As fans eagerly anticipate the releases of her two films, she candidly shared the challenges she faces, expressing how difficult it can be to handle the opinions and expectations of others. People often forget that she’s a real human being with emotions.
“Mentally, sometimes it’s really difficult being in this industry,” she told the outlet, “knowing that there are so many opinions [about] you and what you’re doing, or what you should be or what you could be doing better. People sometimes put you on this pedestal. They forget that you’re a real human being. They forget that you have feelings, that you cry.”
This becomes particularly evident when it comes to her private life, which has faced scrutiny since she opened up about her relationship with YouTuber and rapper DDG. Despite openly expressing their love for each other and sharing affectionate videos on social media, rumors and speculation about their relationship have circulated, causing ups and downs.
“It’s really funny how people look at you [as] still being this young girl, still being this innocent, untouchable thing,” she shared. “I appreciate that as I venture into adulthood, I’m able to make my own decisions.” And when it comes to the details of her personal life, one of those decisions is discretion. “For my peace and my sanity, I have to keep that private.”
