What ‘The Little Mermaid’s’ Halle Bailey Would Give Up For Love | Watch

*Aah! Aah! Aah!

#MyAriel will be floating onto the big screen this month!

Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” live-action reimagining of the Oscar-winning animated musical classic is led by Halle Bailey as the mermaid princess Ariel who wants to impress Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King).

We sat down with the songstress and her on-camera beau to talk about romance, restrictions, and rewards.

EUR: Ariel was willing to give up her voice for love. If you had to give up one thing for love, what would it be and why?

HB: I would learn from Ariel…and maybe I wouldn’t give up my voice…

JHK: Because obviously, they’re not in love at that point…On the one hand, you are willing to sacrifice everything for the person you love, but also if they love you for you, then maybe you shouldn’t have to sacrifice either.

HB: I’m with that!

EUR: King Triton didn’t want Ariel to mix and mingle with the walking folk. What’s one thing your parents forbid you to do as kids?

JHK: I wasn’t allowed game consoles [or video games]. So when the world shut down, the first thing I did, because we had all this time on our hands, was buy a PlayStation. I felt like a grown-up for the first time, even though it’s not really a very grown-up thing to do.

HB: Mine was the buddy system with my sister. [My parents were] like, ‘do not go anywhere alone. The world is a scary place. If you’re by yourself, you don’t ever know what could happen. So don’t go anywhere by yourself.’ Now I really enjoy going to the grocery store by myself.

EUR: What was the most rewarding and challenging part of playing these characters?

JHK: The challenge was to not be overwhelmed by the occasion, by the scale of it, and by the potential pressure that there could be. We all love this film so much and we all grew up with it and we wanted to do it justice, so I think that was a big challenge. A rewarding thing was when we watched it for the first time, and seeing all the work that had gone into it because you’re so wrapped up in it and it’s so consuming when you make a film you don’t really know how it’s going. You have a sense, but it’s this crazy alchemy that comes together in the edit.

#TheLittleMermaid swims into theaters May 26.
