OWN’s No. 1 unscripted series Love & Marriage: Huntsville has been so much of a success that another spinoff is coming. The network has announced a Detroit series will debut this summer. Following the same mold as the first, the Detroit series will chronicle the lives, relationships, and friendships of three couples. Love & Marriage: Detroit is set to premiere June 24 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on OWN, following a new episode of Love & Marriage: Huntsville at 8 p.m. ET.
This is the third series in the Love & Marriage franchise, following Huntsville and Love & Marriage: D.C.
About the show
Love & Marriage is known for putting unconventional cities on the map, and their next stop is Detroit. The Motor City, known as Motown, is on the rise and so are the people, where Black culture is strong.
Per the network’s official announcement, “This reemerging city is all about family, friendship, business, excellence, and of course, love and marriage. Love & Marriage: Detroit will center on a group of African American families with deep ties to Detroit who have decided to stay in the city and prove they can provide the best lives possible for their families in this community on a comeback.”
Meet the couples:
Russell and Kolby Harris are celebrating three years of marriage, and have a two-year-old daughter. Russell is attending divinity school, unbeknownst to his wife, which upsets Kolby. As a preacher’s kid, Kolby is unaware of entering the Christian world in that capacity for another time. Russell also runs a non-profit called Soar Detroit which focuses on literacy and sports, while Kolby is a rising social media influencer. She also has issues with others in the group because of her rising social media popularity.
Brandon and Kristina Bowman-Smith have been married for 11 years and are parents of two. Kristina is a well-known fashion designer, stylist, and influencer in Detroit, and Brandon is the owner of Star Factory, an artist development program, where he trains young people of Detroit with a dream to become singers and recording artists. With Brandon having aspirations of becoming this generation’s Barry Gordy, Kristina isn’t convinced. He is also holding a secret he doesn’t share with his wife, that he is working with a few new female artists in Detroit, but when Kristina finds this out…all hell breaks loose.
And then there’s Anthony and Dr. LaToya Thompson, who have been married for 14 years and share two sons. Anthony works for Live Nation and is the owner of a production studio. LaToya is the breadwinner as a successful sports physical therapist and the owner of Opulence Wines, which causes tension in their marriage.
The show also stars LaToya, a struggling as a Black wine owner in a predominantly white business who disagrees with her husband who intimates he helped build the company.
The series is created by franchise creator Carlos King, and is produced by Kingdom Reign Entertainment with executive producers King, Angela Dugan, Brent Nisbett and Tarin Laughlin.
