*California is one step closer to paying reparations to Black residents whose ancestry dates back to the slave trade.
The California Reparations Task Force released estimates on Monday to determine the amounts an eligible resident would receive as part of a reparation program.
As reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, a Black Californian who is 71 or older could receive $1.2 million.
The possible payments are based on estimates of Black Californians’ total financial losses due to slavery and institutional racism. This breakdown was provided by economists who advised the California Reparations Task Force, which was established in September 2020 following the passage of State Assembly Bill 3121.

A final vote on the proposals will take place Saturday at Mills College.
Here’s more from KTLA:
A new state agency would need to be established to distribute funds and determine eligibility, CalMatters writes. That agency would also help Black Californians trace their lineage to confirm that they are eligible for the payments.
Those who qualify could receive various payments to compensate for the injustices of “over-policing” of Black communities, discrimination in housing, and inequity in the health care system, CalMatters wrote.
Each of those categories includes a maximum payment based on specific timeframes. For instance, a Black Californian who lived in the state between 1971 and 2020 could receive as much as $2,352 per year due to “over-policing.”
The task force reportedly recommends that the money be disbursed as “down payments” if approved.
Additionally, the task force may also recommend the State of California formally apologize for slavery, as well as discriminatory state laws.
If the reparation program is approved, the task force will send a formal proposal for the California legislature to vote upon.
Republicans and some moderate Democrats are likely to oppose the proposals.
