*Janelle Monáe stunned at the star-studded Met Gala where she donned a see-through Thom Browne dress before stripping down into a black sequin bikini.
Ahead of her appearance Monday night, the singer and actress spoke with PEOPLE about her ensemble.
“It’s such a surprise. I have an experience that I’ve put together,” Monáe said. “You have to watch. Watch that red carpet because you don’t want to miss a beat.”
The Met Gala veteran added, “It’s supposed to be fun. It’s supposed not to be serious. So I always enjoy people who are not stressed out over the Met Gala because I’m not.”

According to Bossip, Monáe told ESSENCE that “Jamaican food and sex” were the secret to her banging physique.
Officially called the Costume Institute Benefit, the Met Gala takes place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on the first Monday in May. As CNN reported, this year’s event was co-chaired by actors Michaela Coel and Penélope Cruz, tennis icon Roger Federer, singer Dua Lipa and Vogue’s editorial director Anna Wintour.
The Gala raises money for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.
Monáe flaunted her gorgeous, scantily-clad body for guests at an afterparty at The Standard Hotel’s Boom Boom Room. Watch the Twitter clip below.
“This is once in a lifetime,” Monae told partygoers, Vogue reports. “You could be in bed, but y’all are out, because tonight, this year, we are in the age of pleasure. We are doing the stuff that makes us feel good unapologetically.”

The year’s Met Gala theme was “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” and Monáe reportedly wore Chanel to her first Met Gala in 2011. The late fashion icon served as the creative director of the luxury brand.
“I went with Karl, so this is sort of full circle for us to be honoring him. I’m really excited about what we’ll do,” Monáe told PEOPLE about her outfit at a pre-Met event on Saturday.
