*Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs attended the 2023 Met Gala Monday night (05-01-23) wearing a custom couture Sean John suit & cape that he designed in collaboration with June Ambrose, all inspired by Karl Lagerfeld, as well as paying tribute to the late André Leon Talley. Combs (and his special guest, Yung Miami – yeah, we thought they had gone separate ways, too) was a standout on the red carpet and a force to be reckoned with when it comes to style, His look for the Met Gala was no exception.
The result was a sleek, fashion-forward black motorcycle tuxedo, impeccably tailored with intricate detailing, seamlessly merging the classic elements of Sean John with Lagerfeld’s iconic aesthetic. Constructed from wool and rayon, the tuxedo showcased 600 8mm Swarovski crystals and black pearls as a tribute to Chanel’s and Lagerfeld’s enduring use of this elegant feature.
Coco Chanel revered the pearl as a timeless symbol, and Karl Lagerfeld continued that legacy by incorporating pearls into every collection.
Combs elevated the ensemble with a dramatic taffeta rainwear puffer cape, featuring “Puffy” details that honored Sean John’s iconic puffer coats and represented hip-hop, puffer, and music video energy. Over 1000 custom camellia flowers formed of satin and velvet petals adorned the cape and suit as a nod to Lagerfeld’s love for the camellia. Combs completed the look with signature black accessories, such as sunglasses, finger gloves, and pointed boots—a Lagerfeld staple.
By reinterpreting the motorcycle jacket for his ensemble, Combs paid homage to Lagerfeld’s innovative and daring spirit, resulting in a captivating blend of classic elegance and contemporary flair. The evening included Combs’ own CÎROC Vodka and DeLeón Tequila, ensuring guests had the ultimate experience.
