A diverse music experience travelers anticipate every year, the New Orleans Jazz Fest is one of a kind when it comes to festivals in the Big Easy.
A Heritage Of Jazz
Mahalia Jackson was the first New Orleans Jazz Fest headliner in April 1970. Her sweltering voice took over the stage in her hometown. Alongside her, Duke Ellington graced the festival with his presence. This marked the beginning of a history of musical heavy hitters performing each year at the event.
As time progressed, the festival continued to grow and increase in popularity. They hired well-known event producer George Wein to curate the event. His vision transformed the New Orleans Jazz Fest into a multi-day experience in the city where music was magic.
“The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival represents a new and exciting idea in festival presentation,” Wein said. “This festival could only be held in New Orleans because here and here alone is the richest musical heritage in America.”
By 1978, the festival had expanded to two weekends as it grew in popularity. Folks began traveling all over to attend the event with over 650 thousand attendees at the 2021 festival. Having survived time, hurricanes, and a pandemic, the New Orleans Jazz Fest continues to live on year after year in honor of the heritage of Jazz.
A Piece Of NOLA History
The New Orleans Jazz Festival pays homage to the city it calls home. It provides a sense of musical community; forever a reminder of the connection people share through music.
Over time, the festival has expanded to include crafts, local food, and cultural immersive experiences for guests to enjoy between sets. Festival producers have incorporated numerous sustainability and recycling initiatives to ensure the event respects Mother Nature and is kind to the city. A staple in NOLA every year, the New Orleans Jazz Fest is back again to provide attendees with the soundtrack to their lives live and in person.
