Red Carpet Premiere for ‘Dear Mama The Saga of Afeni and Tupac Shakur’ | Watch

*A mother’s love is something that can never be measured. For those who have that strong bond with your mother, you know you always try to show them your appreciation. The late great Tupac Shakur was no different. He wrote a song dedicated to his mother titled “Dear Mama.”

He always spoke highly of his mother and showed his admiration and appreciation. “Dear Mama” is now the title of the FX docuseries Dear Mama: The Saga of Afeni & Tupac Shakur”

Directed by Allen Hughes the series tells the story of Afeni’s sacrifices as a young Black mother living in poverty and at the height of the Black Panther movement trying to raise a son that wouldn’t be a victim of his environment but a light to his community.

Tupac may have lost his life to gun violence but in his short 25 years on this earth, he inspired so many with his intelligence, activism, and artistry. His impact on the world can still be felt to this day.

We attended the “Dear Mama” premiere and spoke to those who knew both Afeni, and Tupac, and those who were influenced by his work.

“I was raised by a single mother who was an activist and feminist and I related to that,” said director Hughes. “For me it was everything to do a dual narrative. Because we don’t know a lot about what happened with Afeni.”

Most fans of Tupac know his mom influenced his motivation behind being an activist by watching her as a Panther. But what inspired Afeni? This docuseries takes a deeper dive into her background.

Fans will learn more about Tupac’s childhood as well. Viewers will see the vulnerability of both mother and son. Executive producer and associate of Afeni Shakur, Jamal Joesph, describes a moment of that vulnerability.

“When they were alone with no money when it was Afeni and Tupac, living in poverty they still managed to fight and define hope.” When they had no one else they leaned on each other.

Watch “Dear Mama” starting Friday, April 21 on FX to experience the in-depth storytelling of the most iconic mother-and-son duo.
