*The seventh episode in Season 2 of HBO’s “Perry Mason” airs tonight and in it, actress Diarra Kilpatrick who portrays “Clara Drake” has a shining moment when she helps her husband Paul (Chris Chalk) chase a new lead.
The show is set in 1930s Los Angeles and stars Matthew Rhys as the title character, a flawed attorney who investigates the murder of a member of a powerful oil family. The official season two plot synopsis reads, “Months after the Dodson case has come to an end, the scion of a powerful oil family is brutally murdered. When the DA goes to the city’s Hoovervilles to pinpoint the most obvious of suspects, Perry, Della, and Paul find themselves at the center of a case that will uncover far reaching conspiracies and force them to reckon with what it truly means to be guilty.”
“Mason is having this crisis of faith to do with his own imposter syndrome. And he’s not sure whether he wants to be doing it, whether he’s qualified enough to be doing it,” said Rhys of his character in an interview with /Film.
Rhys said this season “takes us in a direction I wasn’t expecting,” partly due to the conflict between Mason and his partners, Della Street (Juliet Rylance) and Paul Drake (Chalk).

“In our early conversations, we really focused on character,” said executive producers Michael Begler in an interview with Collider. “We needed to start from, where did we leave off with Perry, Della and Paul? At the end of the first season, we said they’re like the super friends coming together, but when that dust settles and the party’s over, who are they when they go home? What’s going on with them, both professionally and emotionally?” ” he continued.
In tonight’s episode titled “Chapter Fifteen,” Perry, facing career-ending accusations and potential jail time, must turn to Strickland to stay ahead of the prosecution – and Lydell. With the Gallardos’ fate in the balance, Della presses Hamilton for answers, while Paul enlists Clara to infiltrate a wealthy white suburb in pursuit of the truth, per the synopsis.
