*After Tyronn Lue began making big NBA coin in the late 90s, he did what so many athletes do for their families, make sure they don’t have to work another day in their lives.
In an interview with “The Pivot” podcast, the former Los Angeles Lakers star and current Los Angeles Clippers coach spoke about his journey in the Association, and how his main goal once there was to take care of his family.
“When I got drafted, my mom and grandma they ain’t work another day of their life,” Lue told the show’s hosts. “They’ve been getting a check for 25 years, every month. That was a blessing for me to be able to take care of them and to see where we come from and all the struggles we had of being poor.” He added, “My grandma and my mom, they can have anything.” (Watch Lue’s interview on The Pivot podcast below.)

At one point, his financial advisor voiced concerns about just how much money was going to his family. But Lue wasn’t trying to hear it.
“I said, ‘Man, I’d rather be broke. I don’t want to be rich and my family be broke. I’d rather be broke as long as they’re successful and as long as they’re happy, then I’m okay.”
He continued, “They did a lot raising me. If you just see all the things they did for me to get to this point. I owe them everything. I’ve made a lot of money. I’m secure with my money. I don’t have any kids so it goes to my family.”
Tyronn Lue was born on May 3, 1977, in Mexico, Missouri. He attended Raytown Senior High School, went on to play at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, and was drafted with the 23rd overall pick in the 1998 NBA Draft by the Denver Nuggets. In both the 2000 and 2001 NBA Seasons, he helped the Lakers win NBA Championships. During his 11 years in the NBA, he’s also played for the Hawks, Wizards, Magic, Bucks, Rockets and Mavericks).
Lue has two siblings, Gregory and Shakea, and is first cousins with Boston Celtics superstar Jayson Tatum.
