Mikey Williams, a star basketball recruit who has committed to play for Memphis next season, was arrested on suspicion of multiple counts of assault with a deadly weapon on Thursday in Jamul, California.
According to reports, the 18-year-old basketball star was arrested on suspicion of five felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon. According to the San Diego Sheriff’s Department, Mikey will most likely face only one charge.
The Memphis basketball recruit was accused of violating California’s penal code with a serious charge under Section 245(a)(2). The code highlights that anyone who commits an assault on someone with a firearm can face severe consequences, including up to four years in prison
Lt. Gavin Lanning of the San Diego Sheriff’s Department said Mikey, who is ranked 34th on ESPN’s list of the top 100 recruits in the 2023 class, paid a $50,000 bond and was released at 12:14 a.m. Friday. He is scheduled to appear in court for the first time on Thursday, April 20th.
According to the incident report, multiple people were asked to leave a residence, and shots were fired as five people drove away in one car. The car was struck, but no one was injured.
A SWAT team and detectives served a search warrant Thursday at a home in the 2600 block of Bratton Valley Road in Jamul, according to department officials. According to officials, the warrant was issued in connection with a shooting that occurred on the property on March 27th.
10News San Diego reports:
“There was a verbal argument about guests in the house being asked to leave. Five people got into a car and as they were driving away, shots were fired. The car was hit, but no one was hurt. The incident was reported to the Rancho San Diego Sheriff’s Station and Rural Command the next day, March 28.”
Officials added, “Three of the passengers in the car are minors. It is the policy of the Sheriff’s Department not to release identifying information about minor victims. This is all the information that can be released at this time as the investigation continues including interviewing additional witnesses.”
The famed basketball star has hired Troy P. Owens, a San Diego criminal defense attorney. According to Owens’ statement, which was released Friday night, the alleged shooting occurred at Williams’ home following a “altercation.”
“This altercation was initiated by several uninvited individuals entering the home and causing a disturbance,” Owens’ statement said. “During the aftermath of this disturbance, there were reports of shots being fired. Mr. Williams is alleged to match the description of the shooter. As a result, a search warrant was executed at the home and Mr. Williams was arrested. He has posted bond and looks forward to addressing any allegations against him using the established procedures in our justice system.”
The statement continued, “we ask that people appreciate the fact that Mr. Williams is an 18-year-old high school student. Harassment, threats, or any other behavior of the sort is unwarranted. We are aware of several narratives being advanced online that are not factual and are designed to humiliate Mr. Williams. We are confident that the truth will come to light. Mr. Williams is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.”
Memphis said in a statement that it was “aware of the situation” and “gathering more information.” Mikey, a 6-foot-2 guard, has emerged as one of the most popular amateur basketball players on social media in recent years. He has 3.8 million Instagram followers, 2.1 million TikTok followers, and his highlights have millions of views on YouTube. On Friday, Mikey’s Instagram account was deactivated.
Using social media to his advantage, Mikey leveraged his massive social media following into lucrative endorsement deals, including a sneaker deal with Puma. He became the first American high school basketball player to sign a contract with a global footwear company as a result of this.
As a freshman, Mikey played for San Ysidro High School before transferring to Lake Norman Christian School in North Carolina. He declared his intention to return to San Ysidro for his senior year in April 2022.
