*The Mask and the Cross exhibition describes the artist’s creative phase from 1967 through 1978, during which he created numerous works marrying Nigerian tradition, folklore, and cosmology with Catholic motifs and stories from the Bible.
Bruce Onobrakpeya at 90, is amongst the most successful artists to have emerged from Nigeria from West Africa during the 20th century, with continuing and commanding influence on the generation of artists in Nigeria. He was born in 1932.
An hour conversation segment was held about his work of 60 years led by another Nigerian American icon and eminent visual artist and cartoonist, painter, art historian, curator, art critic, art administrator, and teacher, Dr. dele Jegede, professor of art history who resides in Ohio.
Dr. Bruce Onobrakpeya’s The Mask and the Cross exhibition which started on April 7 runs up till July 30.
On April 6, representatives of the Georgia State Assembly honored Onobrakpeya with the Key to Georgia at The High Museum, Atlanta.
