*We caught up with Toni Collette and John Leguizamo to discuss their roles in the new Prime Video thriller “The Power,” which debuts March 31.
The series, per the official synopsis, is based on the New York Times best-selling novel by Naomi Alderman and centers on a group of teen girls who develop the power to electrocute people at will. The series features a cast of remarkable characters from London to Seattle, Nigeria to Eastern Europe, as the Power evolves from a tingle in teenagers’ collarbones to a complete reversal of the power balance of the world.
The series stars Collette as Mayor Margot Cleary-Lopez, Leguizamo as Rob Lopez, Auli’i Cravalho as Jos Cleary-Lopez, Toheeb Jimoh as Tunde Ojo, Josh Charles as Daniel Dandon, Eddie Marsan as Bernie Monke, Ria Zmitrowicz as Roxy Monke, Zrinka Cvitešić as Tatiana Moskalev, and Halle Bush as Allie Montgomery.
“It’s about evolution and revolution,” Collette said about the series, adding “and there are a lot of non-believers and she’s the person who takes it upon herself to step up and be the truth-teller and to try and help those who need it, namely a lot of teenage girls who are confronted by this newfound power,” she said about her character, “which is ultimately a metaphor for The Power that we all actually have inherently in us, but a lot of us haven’t been encouraged to develop it and nurture it and get to know ourselves. So it’s about equality, it’s about inclusivity, and I just find it completely inspirational,” Collette explained.

Leguizamo noted that this series “is touching upon a lot of real subject matter that’s going on in the world.”
He added, “Here we are using The Power in the way girls are being wrangled and rounded up and tested. It’s kind of like what’s happening with Roe versus Wade being demolished, with the attack on trans people in America, attack on Black studies and Latin studies in America. I mean, this show helps us see that, but see it in an entertaining way, so maybe we can question ourselves and our culpability in it or our participation in it so we can fix ourselves and things.”

The first three episodes of “The Power” will premiere exclusively on Prime Video on Friday, March 31, with new episodes available each Friday, leading up to the season finale on May 12.
