Alison Hammond Becomes First Black Woman to Host ‘Great British Bake Off’

*ITV presenter Alison Hammond is replacing Matt Lucas as host of “The Great British Bake Off.”

“It’s Official!! It’s happening The Great British Bake off! let’s have it — The cake that is [emoji] so excited,” Hammond tweeted Friday, NBC News reports.

Channel 4’s chief content officer Ian Katz said of Hammond: “Alison is much loved, effortlessly funny and the owner of the best laugh in Britain. She was a huge hit when she appeared on ‘Celebrity Bake Off’ and we’re thrilled to have her back in the tent.”

Hammond will be the first person of color to serve in the tole when she joins Noel Fielding as co-host on the next season of the long-running baking show.

Hammond participated in the celebrity version of “Bake Off” in 2020. The beloved baking show launched in the U.K. in 2010 on the BBC but moved to Channel 4 in 2017.

“It gives me so much pleasure to welcome @alisonhammond55 into the tent. I’m absolutely pumped we are working together. We are gonna spend the whole time giggling like naughty school kids. The bakers are gonna love you to bits,” Fielding wrote in the caption to a photo of Hammond.

“The Great British Bake Off” veteran judge Prue Leith also praised Hammond on social media, writing “Huge congratulations Alison, you will be magnificent and I can’t wait for your infectious laugh to be ringing through the tent.”

The show’s Season 13 wrapped in November. The celebrity edition returned to Channel 4 on Sunday.
