The Emmy-winning series A Black Lady Sketch Show is back for its fourth season on HBO. The show returns April 14 at 11/10c. The trailer for the new series shows some returning characters as well as new insights into the Black woman’s mind.
This season features actress and Here’s The Thing co-host Angel Laketa Moore among its new cast members, including Tik Tok personality DaMya Gurley and The Voice star Tamara Jade. Returning core cast members include creator Robin Thede, Gabrielle Dennis, and Skye Townsend. The series also boasts over 20 celebrity guest stars.
The logline for the series is exhibited in the show’s title–Black women create funny sketches that reflect their life and experiences. To quote the logline, “The narrative sketch comedy series features a core cast of Black women living relatable and hilarious experiences in a magical reality that subverts traditional expectations.“
The fourth season has a lot to live up to; in 2022, Thede called the third season her favorite yet.
“It is hands down my favorite season that we have done. We have 40 guest stars, we have these massive set pieces [and] we’re just breaking the boundaries of what sketch comedy can be, not for black women, but for comedians and for comedy, period,” she exclaimed. “Anybody who watches this season and isn’t impressed has no humor in their body. We explore so many things and it’s our densest season. Between the four core cast members, we’re playing over 100 characters, well over 100 characters, in six episodes which is so dense and fun.”
A Black Lady Sketch Show has earned 13 Primetime Emmy nominations and three Emmy Awards, including for directing a variety series and editing for variety programming. Thede executive produces with Issa Rae via her company HOORAE, Dave Becky, 3 Arts Entertainment’s Jonathan Berry, JAX Media’s Brooke Posch and Tony Hernandez.
