*Colin Kaepernick is speaking out about his newly released book titled, “Colin Kaepernick: Change the Game,” which unpacks his early years before he became an activist and an NFL star.
The graphic novel is geared toward young adults, which Kap co-authored with Eve L. Ewing, a professor and sociologist at the University of Chicago, CBS News reports.
“You know, very similar to the messaging of the book is I don’t have control over all of these situations. But I control how I respond to it, I control how I prepare for it, and I’m a believer that in doing that, good things will happen,” Kaepernick said in an interview with CBS.
Kaepernick also details in his new book being raised by White adoptive parents, and his challenges to embrace his blackness.
“I know my parents loved me, but there were still very problematic things that I went through. I think it was important to show, ‘No, this can happen in your own home.’ And how do we move forward collectively while addressing the racism that is being perpetuated,” he said.
Kaepernick’s publishing company describes “Colin Kaepernick: Change the Game” as “an inspiring high school graphic novel memoir for readers 12 and up from celebrated athlete and activist Colin Kaepernick.”
The synopsis continues: “A high school senior at a crossroads in life and heavily scouted by colleges and Major League Baseball (MLB), Colin has a bright future ahead of him as a highly touted prospect. Everyone, from his parents to his teachers and coaches, is in agreement on his future. Everyone but him. Colin isn’t excited about baseball. In the words of five-time all-star MLB player Adam Jones, “Baseball is a white man’s sport.” He looks up to athletes like Allen Iverson: talented, hyper-competitive, unapologetically Black, and dominating their sports while staying true to themselves. College football looks a lot more fun than sleeping on hotel room floors in the minor leagues of baseball. But Colin doesn’t have a single offer to play football. Yet. This touching YA graphic novel memoir explores the story of how a young change-maker learned to find himself, make his own way, and never compromise.”
Kap tells CBS that when he turned to football as a younger man, he found, for the first time, a sense of belonging.
“There were a lot more Black people in football. I was like, ‘Oh, I found some community here,’” he said.
Kaepernick’s professional football career began in 2011 with the San Francisco 49ers but he was booted from the NFL in 2016 for protesting racial injustice. These days, he continues to practice and stay ready for a possible return to the sport.
“Five, six days a week I’m still up at 4:30, I go get my training in. Yeah, that passion is still there and the ability is still there,” he said.
