The film will follow her early career in Oakland as she honed her musical talents to become a multi-platinum-selling recording artist and TV personality, according to the description. The film will also focus on her “complicated yet warmhearted relationship” with her mother Frankie Lons (Morgan). The film will be part of Lifetime’s celebration of Black Music Month.
“This is a story of a daughter’s love for her mother and although my heart remains broken from her untimely passing I am honored to be sharing it with the world,” said Cole in a statement. “Playing the role of myself was a unique opportunity to re-live special moments in my life that also gave me the chance to process her loss in ways I did not expect. I miss her every day and even though she is not here, her presence was felt throughout this film. Mom, I love you.”
Lifetime’s Black Music Month celebration will also include TLC Forever, which will be simulcast on Lifetime and A&E on June 3. The documentary will center the remaining TLC members Chilli and T-Boz telling their experiences in their words.
According to the description, the documentary will chronicle “the journey of the top-selling American female group of all time who led the way with their music, message and their style. The special documents the revolutionary group that broke boundaries, influenced an entire generation and survived against all odds as T-Boz and Chilli tell their story for the first time in a feature documentary.”
The documentary is directed by Matthew Kay and executive produced by Roger Ross Williams via his and Geoff Martz’ production company, One Story Up.
Lifetime and A&E have also greenlit the second documentary about Janet Jackson, Janet Jackson: Family First. The second documentary will follow Jackson as she prepares for her 2023 “Together Again” tour and the equally highly-anticipated reunion of The Jacksons, thanks to a collaboration between Jackson and her brother Randy.
