*Amazon is warning Fire TV Stick users against streaming content through unofficial apps.
Fire Sticks give users access to TV shows from streaming platforms such as Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, and Disney+. The remote control can also download illegal apps. This is known as ‘jailbreaking,’ which removes restrictions on the device and allows users to sideload third-party apps that aren’t on Amazon’s store.
Amazon is hoping to crack down on this via a new warning message. As AFTVnews reports, now when an illegal app is loaded, a warning pops up which reads: “WARNING: When you use applications from unknown sources, your TV and personal data are less secure and there is a risk of unexpected behavior. You agree that you are solely responsible for any damage to your device or loss of data that may result from using these applications.”
According to reports, Amazon isn’t stopping access to unofficial apps.
Meanwhile, Express UK writes, “Using non-official platforms comes with other dangers such as data-stealing malware and displaying inappropriate adult content on TVs which will be worrying for those with young children in the house.”
In related news, a recent update has prevented many users from being able to change the buttons of their Fire Stick remotes.
As reported by AFTVNews, a recent update to the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max has (for the second time) blocked the installation of the “Remapper,” app. The app “is designed to simply open a different app than the one listed on one of the Fire TV remote’s four dedicated app buttons, giving the user the choice of which app can be opened,” per 9to5google.com.
