*The World Cup 2022 last year in Qatar, sprung surprises with top nations being defeated by the underdogs and Morocco made history to become the first African nation to reach the semifinal of the competition. The United States bowed out of the competition as they went down 3-1 to the Netherlands. Then there was the “final of finals” with Argentina clashing head to head with defending champions France which has a significant amount of Black footballers playing on the French National team. The Final was billed as the Argentine legend Lionel Messi versus French Superstar Kylian Mbappe. The game did not disappoint with Argentina winning through penalty shoot-outs. This Black History Month 2023 in the U.S., OUR ROOTS salutes all Black players around the US who may have been inspired by Kylian Mbappe and who may go on to be great soccer players themselves.
