Ex-Alabama Basketball Player Darius Miles & Friend Michael Davis Charged With Capital Murder In Killing Of Young Mother Jamea Harris After She ‘Wouldn’t Talk To Him’

Several lives were ruined over a fragile ego. Darius Miles, a former University of Alabama basketball player, and his friend Michael Davis have been charged with capital murder after a fatal shooting near campus that took the life of 23-year-old mom Jamea Harris. The reason for the shooting? Jamea refused to talk to the former basketball player! The devastating details inside…

It’s absolutely heartbreaking and infuriating to think a woman can’t even have a night out on the town with her boyfriend and her cousin without being gunned down for rejecting a man’s advances.

Darius Miles (above), a former University of Alabama basketball player, allegedly gunned down a 23-year-old mother of one because she brushed him off, according to the victim’s distraught mother. Jamea Jonae Harris was killed early Sunday (Jan. 15th) when Darius Miles, 21, allegedly opened fire on a car she was riding in an area near campus, according to officials.

The former Alabama basketball player and his friend, Michael Lynn Davis (above), 20, have been charged with capital murder in relation to the shooting near “The Strip” in Tuscaloosa. The charge carries the possibility of the death penalty in Alabama.

“Took my baby’s life because she wouldn’t talk to him,” DeCarla Cotton, the mother of the victim, wrote on Facebook.

According to reports, Jamea had been visiting her boyfriend and cousin at the University of Alabama when the group got involved in a “minor altercation” with Darius, from Washington, D.C., and Michael, from Maryland. The young mother was sitting in the passenger side of a car when she was shot and killed.

Police identified the shooters after they reviewed surveillance footage and interviewed multiple witnesses.

Below is chilling surveillance footage caught on a Ring camera which captured the moment Darius Miles allegedly opened fire:

Authorities claim that one of the suspects was shot and wounded by the driver of the vehicle carrying Jamea, who claimed that it was done in “self-defense.” It was not clear which of the two men was shot. It’s also unclear on if it was the boyfriend or the cousin who shot at the suspects.

The night Darius allegedly killed Jamea, he was clearly ego tripping. That all changed when those cuffs were placed on his wrists. The former b’ball star appeared to be crying during a perp walk outside of the Tuscaloosa County Jail.

“I love you more than you can imagine,” he said while being placed inside of a cop car. Watch the clip above.

“She was a beautiful young woman who loved her family and most of all her 5-year-old son Kaine,’’ Jamea’s mom told AL.com.

“She was just trying to enjoy her weekend with her cousin that attends the University of Alabama and her boyfriend.”

A GoFundMe was set up online to help support Jamea’s 5-year-old son, Kaine. “I was asked to up this fundraiser to assist with the care of my daughters son Kaine,” read a description on the page. “Her life was taken from her at the young age of 23 in a senseless cowardly act . She leaves behind a five year old son that will never know how beautiful his mother was inside and out. She had a heart of gold and was loved by all. It’s no way to express how much she will be missed! I thank everyone that has reached out with their prayers and condolences and I appreciate however you would like to help.”

As of the time of this post, the GoFundMe has raised over $9,500. You can donate here.

Alabama basketball coach Nate Oats spoke to reporters to offer his condolences to Jamea’s family following the “incredibly sad situation.”

“I just want to start by offering condolences to the family and friends of Jamea Jonae Harris, the young woman, mother, daughter who was taken away too soon from a senseless act,” Oats said in a prepared statement. “This is an incredibly sad situation. Hearts go out to her loved ones. I’m keeping them in my thoughts and prayers as they continue to grieve.”

Jamea’s cousin, Kennedi Henderson, said she was a “humble soul” and that she was always “happy.” She said Jamea “kept the cousins together and pushed us to be the best us. She was the best little cousin I can ask for, honestly.”

“The family and I are just in disbelief that something like this has happened to her. We just ask for prayers at this time.”

Jamea’s mother took to Facebook to thank everyone for reaching out and their prayers.

”I would like to thank each and every one of you personally that has reached out to me or my family in the last 24 hours!!,” she wrote. “Thank you for understanding if I haven’t called you or text you back…. IT’S BEEN A LOT TO DEAL WITH. I love you all so very much and continue to keep us in your prayers . Kaine needs his village right now!!”

We can’t even imagine!

Attorneys for Darius Miles released a statement Sunday regarding the shooting. “Darius Miles and his family are heartbroken tonight over the death of Jamea Jonae Harris,” the statement read. “While Darius has been accused of being involved with this tragedy, he maintains his innocence and looks forward to his day in court. Our firm’s own investigation is ongoing, and no further statement will be made at this time.”

We send our heartfelt condolences to Jamea’s family, especially her five-year-old son, during this impossible time.
