She took the stage after sunset Saturday at the annual music concert in Central Park – which has the goal of ending extreme poverty – wearing a see-through Rani Zakhem mermaid gown with a plunging neckline, bejeweled with 10,000 Swarovski crystals.
About five minutes into her performance, the superstar singer paused to ask for some touch-ups as the crowd looked around in confusion.
“Can I get a glam moment? … It’s weird, but it’s OK,” she asked before her team took to the stage with a hairbrush, a hand fan and makeup brushes.
She also expressed concerns about the technical aspects of her set.
“I’m supposed to walk to the piano, but I’m trying to get the right lighting,” Carey told the crowd. “Anyone who’s ever been to one of my shows knows that I accept nothing but the utmost tippity-tip-tip-top of the lighting.”
She added, “So why did they have me rehearsing during the daytime?”
Surprise! Mariah Carey recorded a secret grunge-rock album and now she wants fans to hear it
Her throwback hits “We Belong Together,” “Always Be My Baby” and “Obsessed” were crowd-pleasers. She also celebrated the 25th anniversary for her “Butterfly” album and spoke on international issues.
She explained that her song “Hero,” which became an unofficial anthem for 9/11, has a new meaning to her.
“I was listening to that song again, in light of more current issues … particularly the status of women in our country and around the world,” Carey said. “I’m so proud of everything this generation is doing to make the strides for equality for all … whether it be race- or gender-related.”
Her performance was followed by a finale with an electrifying performance from Metallica, which included a new version of “Nothing Else Matters” with country singer Mickey Guyton.
Other performers include the Jonas Brothers (followed by an onstage smooch between Nick Jonas and the festival’s host, his wife Priyanka Chopra), Charlie Puth, Billy Porter, Rosalia and Måneskin.
Global Citizen celebrated its 10th anniversary with concerts in New York and Accra, Ghana. Fans scored free tickets in a lottery by taking actions to help defeat poverty: signing petitions, calling elected officials and sending out tweets in support of the mission.
