A$AP Rocky opens up about the rap game to Jerrod Carmichael in a new interview where he explains the state of the industry is stuck in an adolescence stage that was launched when Soulja Boy hit the scene. More inside…
A month ago, A$AP Rocky’s life changed. The Harlem rapper and his girlfriend Rihanna welcomed a baby boy – their first child – in Los Angeles.
With the new arrival, the fashion lover is also gearing up to release a new album. Life is about to get hectic for the 33-year-old entertainer.
The “Fashion Killa” rapper did an interview with Interview magazine where he chopped it up with comedian Jerrod Carmichael. During their chat, the new dad shared his opinion about the current state of Hip Hop.
“Rap is in its adolescence and it’s been stuck here since Soulja Boy,” Rocky said. “Before, everybody looked 35 and up. When Lil Wayne and Jay-Z and T.I. and Jeezy and [Rick] Ross was on, rappers looked old. Like, we had Lil’ Bow Wow and that was it. That all changed with the internet and self-releasing. Now, rap is stuck in this braggadocious, adolescent space. It’s not as mature.”
He continued, “But the thing is, being a rapper now, you don’t want to exclude anybody or neglect any demographics. As somebody that people look up to, there’s a responsibility to put people on the right path.”
Umm…
So, his song “D.M.B.” – which stands for “Dats My B****” – is “mature” rap? The song goes:
Roll my blunt, fill my cup, be my b*tch
Hold my gun, load it up, count my slugs
(That’s my b*tch)
They don’t know nothin’
Roll my blunt, be my b*tch (that’s my b*tch)
They don’t know nothin’
Roll my blunt, fill my cup (that’s my b*tch)
They don’t know nothin’
Interesting.
Since he mentioned Soulja Boy, the “Crank That” rapper has seemingly responded to Rocky’s comments.

”Come on, man. Stop listening to people, bro,” Soulja said in an IG Live. “N*ggas don’t know what the fuck they talking about, on gang. That’s what I found out, bro. These n*ggas don’t be knowing what the f*ck they talking about, bro. N*ggas be on my Instagram, n*ggas be on Twitter, n*ggas be in person talking… about nothing. Bro, what is you talking about, bro? What is you talking about? N*ggas be talking about everything but how to get some money.”
Bloop. You can read Rocky’s full conversation with Jerrod Carmichael here.

Rocky – who was arrested in Apil in connection to a 2021 L.A. shooting – was spotted rocking Ugg boots, leaving the studio in Los Angeles, which was the first time he was seen since he and RiRi welcomed their baby boy.
The new dad was seen snapping it up (and smoking) with rappers Trippie Redd, Lil Bibby, and Zzz. Peep the clip above.
