Cuomo Top Aide Melissa DeRosa Resigns

Melissa DeRosa resigned on Sunday, less than a week after a detailed report announced Governor Andrew Cuomo sexually harassed 11 women.

What We Know:

  • Regarding her resignation, DeRosa claimed it was the greatest honor of her life to serving New Yorkers for the past 10 years. She declared that New York’s “resilience, strength, and optimism through the most difficult times” inspired her daily. Despite stating the past two years affected her mentally and emotionally, she expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with talented and committed colleagues. However, she did not mention Cuomo.
  • DeRosa’s name appeared several times throughout New York Attorney General Letitia James‘ investigation report on Cuomo. The document detailed DeRosa’s role in the attempt to discredit Lindsey Boylan, an accuser. DeRosa apparently leaked personnel records and partook in an effort to write and release a letter defaming Boylan’s character. The aide has not publicly responded to James’ report or any accusations regarding her position.
  • In addition to the new information, DeRosa came under scrutiny in February for her role in the Cuomo administration’s under-reporting of nursing home deaths due to COVID-19. During a conversation with lawmakers, she said the administration did not provide them with the information requested months earlier because the team became more concerned with an inquiry from former Pres. Donald Trump’s Department of Justice.
  • Currently, Gov. Andrew Cuomo faces a potential impeachment trial due to the sexual harassment allegations. James’ document explains Cuomo took advantage of current and former state employees by kissing, groping, and touching them inappropriately. He also made multiple ill-suited remarks towards the women. Many political figures, including President Joe Biden, are calling for the removal of the three-term governor.

Regardless of the evidence and criticism from prominent leaders, Cuomo denies everything. He also publicly announced he would not step down from his position.
