‘Lovecraft Country’ Creator Misha Green Inks Overall Deal with Apple

Misha Green, co-creator and showrunner of Lovecraft Country, has struck a multiple-year deal with Apple after a competitive bidding process.

What We Know:

  • Green’s most recent project, Lovecraft Country, was based on Matt Ruff’s novel of the same name. Season one garnered critical acclaim, a Golden Globe nomination for best drama, and a record-breaking 18 Emmy nominations, including Lead Actor for Jonathan Majors, Lead Actress for Journee Smollett, and Outstanding Writing For a Drama Series. Season two would have expanded past the novel, retitled Lovecraft Country: Supremacy, and was set to take place in the “Sovereign States of America”. Despite HBO owning the show, Warner Bros. TV produced it and ultimately passed on renewing the series.

  • Former Sony TV presidents Zack Van Amburg and Jaime Erlicht, as well as former WGN America chief Matt Cherniss, will now be working with Green at Apple TV+. The trio developed Green’s other project, Underground, also starring Smollett, followed men and women before the Civil War utilizing the Underground Railroad. Underground only lasted two seasons and was also canceled despite critical acclaim when WGN America decided to leave scripted series behind. Green co-created, executive produced and was a co-showrunner.
  • Apple is working tirelessly to own original programming in its new streaming platform, Apple TV+. They launched their in-house studio last year and now have names like Kerry Ehrin (The Morning Show), Alena Smith (Dickinson), Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, and Idris Elba contributing. Green will create and develop new shows exclusive to Apple TV+ streaming.

  • Prior to the overall deal, Green was already signed up to lead the efforts for a new Tomb Raider film, a Cleopatra Jones revival, and a Kate Wood action film Fuel. Other television credits for Green range from Sons of Anarchy to Spartacus.

There is no word on any plans to continue with season two of Lovecraft Country: Supremacy, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed.  Either way, we get more of Misha Green and for that we are grateful.
