Vogue features First Lady Jill Biden as the face of their August issue. In this edition, Jill discusses her relationship with President Joe Biden, fashion, and her goals throughout her husband’s term.

- The decision to feature Jill sparked criticism from the right-wing. Throughout former President Donald Trump’s four years in office, Vogue never invited First Lady Melania Trump to star on its cover. A few of Trump’s supporters took to dragging Jill’s style choices. Some even chose to call Jill names such as “old hag,” and say she wears curtains and tablecloths.

- Despite the harsh words, the present First Lady made a lasting impression on Vogue. The profile written by Jonathan Van Meter praises her contribution to education and how it has impacted women across the country. He specifically highlights her support for the Navajo Nation, and how she intends on continuing her professorship while First Lady. Van Meter opines that Jill’s compassionate and kind nature will truly help President Joe Biden create his legacy.
“It’s hard to imagine Joe doing this without her,” Washington Post reporter Mary Jordan told Van Meter.
- Additionally, she explained she felt shocked that her fashion choices spark conversation. She was especially surprised because she’s never hired a stylist. Jill also chooses from a “diverse group” of designers and repeats outfits, which Vogue editors celebrate as practicing fashion sustainability.
- Jill also took the time to explain why she believes her husband got elected. When asked about the country’s mood, she stated that she felt anxiety from people during the Biden campaign; she believed Americans wanted someone to come and heal the nation, “not just from the pandemic;” she even describes her husband as a “calmer” president. Jill also mentioned that she and Joe still try and make time to improve their relationship, even as President and First Lady.
Jill is the third First Lady to garner a profile and cover in Vogue; prior to her, the magazine presented former First Ladies Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama on their front pages.
