Maryland State Police are investigating a pedestrian collision on Route 50 Tuesday morning.
What We Know:
- Authorities arrived on the scene at around 3:30 a.m. The collision involved a tractor-trailer towards the eastbound lanes of Route 50, close to Route 301. Investigators have identified the victim as a woman who is not from the state of Maryland.
- It is unclear why the woman was walking in the middle of the highway. The driver of the tractor-trailer stayed on the scene as authorities arrived. The eastbound lanes of Route 50 were closed for three hours for the investigation. No charges have been filed yet.
- The victim who was hit died on the scene. The driver was not injured in the crash. Authorities are withholding the victim’s name and information until her family has been notified.
- This is the second case of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle eastbound on Route 50 in the month of June. A 62-year-old Stevensville man also died after he was struck by a car. Authorities claim the victim was unresponsive. Investigators say the driver contacted the Queen Anne’s County Emergency Operation Center about possibly hitting an animal. No charges were filed for this case either.
The CDC reports that in 2017, 5,977 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes in the United States.
