On June 4, Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, gave birth to her and Prince Harry’s second child, Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor. She is Queen Elizabeth II’s eleventh great-grandchild.
What We Know:
- The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced the news on their organization, Archewell’s website this Sunday. The report states Meghan delivered Lili at 11:40 a.m. “in the trusted care of the doctors and staff at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital”. The couple also added that their new arrival weighed in at 7 pounds, 11 ounces. In addition, they assured that the mother and daughter were “healthy and well” and already sent home.
- Prince Harry and Meghan named their daughter after two important women in the Royal Family. Her first name, Lilibet, comes from the family’s nickname for Queen Elizabeth II. Her middle name, Diana, honors Prince Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana.
- At the end of their statement, the Duke and Duchess thanked people across the globe for their love, prayers, kindness, and support. Alongside this, they urged anyone wishing to send gifts to the newborn to instead support and learn more about organizations such as Girls Inc., Harvest Home, CAMFED, and Myna Mahila Foundation, which help women and girls in need.
- Despite the icy relations between the Sussexes and the other Windsors due to the couple’s departure from the monarchy last year, certain family members sent their regards to the new addition via social media. That includes the Queen, the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

- Lilibet is eighth in line to the throne; she follows behind her grandfather, Charles, the Prince of Wales, Uncle William, the Duke of Cambridge, William’s three children, her father Harry, and older brother Archie. Since Meghan delivered Lilibet in the United States, she became the most senior royal in the line of succession to be born overseas. Alongside this, her dual citizenship offers her the opportunity to run for political positions in the US while also holding lineage to the British throne.
