The announcement that The Weeknd will perform at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards came on Monday.
What We Know:
- The announcement is the first of a daily countdown of performers leading up to May 23rd. That is the day when the Billboard Music Awards (BMA) airs, live from Los Angeles. The BMAs are honors given out annually by Billboard. Billboard is a publication and music popularity chart covering the music business.
- The awards show has been held annually since 1990 but went on hiatus in 2006. The awards returned in 2011 and have taken place in May ever since. It includes award categories such as the Artist Achievement Award, Century Award, Millenium Award, and Icon Award. The artist the currently holds the record for most BMAs won is Drake, with 27 total awards.
- The Weeknd has won eight Billboard Music Awards himself. This year The Weeknd is nominated in 16 categories. Some of the categories include top artists and top Hot 100 artists. The Weeknd is the second artist in history to have three No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 in three different years from one album.
- It was also recently revealed that P!nk would be receiving this year’s Icon Award and will also perform. The BMAs celebrate music’s greatest achievements, with finalists determined by their placement on Billboard charts. Album/Digital song sales, streaming, radio airplay, and social engagement are all tracked by Billboard in determining winners. This year’s awards are based on the period of March 21st, 2020, through April 3rd, 2021.
The 2021 Billboard Music Awards are produced by Dick Clark Productions, which is owned by MRC Media.
