Former Brooklyn Center police officer Kim Potter will be charged with second-degree manslaughter in the death of 20-year-old Daunte Wright, authorities say.
What We Know:
- Pete Orput, Washington County Attorney says the complaint is being processed late Wednesday morning. Potter, the officer who fatally shot Wright during a traffic stop Sunday afternoon, resigned from Tuesday, as did Police Chief Tim Gannon.
- Gannon said he believes Potter, a 26-year veteran police office with the Brooklyn Center PD department, meant to deploy her Taser.
“As I watched the video and listen to the officer’s commands, it is my belief that the officer had the intention to deploy their Taser but instead shot Mr. Wright with a single bullet,” Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon said. “This appears to me from what I viewed and the officer’s reaction in distress immediately after that this was an accidental discharge that resulted in the tragic death of Mr. Wright.”
- Wright was pulled over for expired tags. While running his information, officers discovered there was a warrant out for his arrest. The pending warrant was for having a firearm without a permit.
