3 Dead, Several Injured in San Diego After Car Drives Into Pedestrians

The vehicle struck pedestrians at a homeless camp near San Diego City College around 9 am.

What We Know:

  • The suspect, Craig Voss, has been charged with one felony count of driving under the influence, several counts each of causing injury while committing a felony, and vehicular manslaughter. Prior to the incident, police claim they received a call reporting a possible drunk driver in a vehicle that matched the description of Voss’ Volvo. The street where the homeless camp resides is located under an overpass and has been temporarily closed by authorities for the time being.
  • Voss was arrested after he identified himself as the person driving the vehicle to police. After he struck the victims, Voss attempted to assist the victims before paramedics arrived. Ronnie Williams, one of the victims, claims that he was “dragged by the car that hit the sidewalk.” He continued to report that he “couldn’t move for like five minutes” after the incident. Chief David Nisleit revealed authorities are currently searching for footage leading up to the incident.
  • Mayor Todd Gloria gave a statement to the public revealing that “most, if not all, sheltering under the bridge were homeless.” Jim Vargas, President and CEO of Father Joe’s Villages gave his sentiments to the victims as well. Father Joe’s Villages is a comprehensive homeless shelter program that is dedicated to ending homelessness in San Diego. In a report from 2018, San Diego was rated as having the fourth highest homeless population in the United States.

“It’s a sad day for us downtown, those of us who especially work very closely with those who’re on the streets.” Vargas announced in his statement.

  • Homeless advocates stress how important it is for people in need of shelter to use those services available. The belief is that if people had not been forced to the streets, they wouldn’t be subject to chaotic incidents such as this one. In total, there were 9 victims, with three dead, two in critical condition, and four unknown. A memorial was crafted later that evening for the individuals who lost their lives.

Homelessness is nationwide, and with the ongoing pandemic plague, it appears as if homeless shelters and organizations are increasing their efforts to provide less fortunate families with assistance.
