Meghan, Harry’s Archewell Foundation to Support Racial Justice Groups

The charities Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will help focus on mental health, online racial justice, and media diversity.

What We Know:

  • On Friday, March 12, 2021, former Royals Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced their foundation, Archewell, will back four organizations. The list includes Mind, a British mental health charity that publicly supported Markle’s discussion about struggling with depression and suicidal thoughts during her interview with Oprah Winfrey. The trust also scorned Piers Morgan for believing Markle was lying.
  • Another name on the list of organizations includes Color of Change, the largest online racial justice group in the United States. The website, founded in 2005, intends on raising the political voices of African Americans. It advocates for criminal justice reform, economic equality, and voting freedom.
  • The previous Duke and Duchess of Sussex emphasized racism in the British press in their conversation with Oprah. In light of this, they will be donating to two groups that promote media diversity. These are the U.K.’s PressPad Charitable Foundation and the U.S.’s URL Media. The latter, which was launched in January, says it is a “multi-platform network of high-performing Black and Brown media organizations.”
  • The United Kingdom’s PressPad celebrated the Sussexes’ support on Twitter. PressPad is an enterprise that connects fresh journalists with subsidized aid from experienced journalists. The foundation announced it in four posts.

“We are delighted to announce that we have just registered a sister charity, The PressPad Charitable Foundation, and are thrilled that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and their Archewell Foundation will be among our first donors.” PressPad’s first Tweet stated.

  • “We’re excited by such positive action after difficult yet important moments of reckoning for the U.K. media,” they continued.

The ex-Royals’ statement comes after an interview with Oprah Winfrey in which they explained why they departed from the monarchy. The Archewell Foundation has mentioned it intends to create compassion in the community to break down systemic racism. By donating to these charities, Archewell Foundation hopes to instill cultural change.
