This is not the first time Lil Mama has made comments about the transgender community.
What We Know:
- Lil Mama’s comments come a week after former First Lady Michelle Obama praised Dwayne Wayne’s transgender 13-year-old daughter Zaya during their virtual Q&A. Obama went on to say Zaya was a role model for embracing her truth. Michelle Obama believed Zaya was the best person to promote the youth edition of her memoir, Becoming.
- Instagram User @its_onsite posted a screenshot of Lil Mama’s post on Twitter, which states:
“So children are too young to smoke cigarettes, too young to drink alcohol, too young to get a drivers license, too young to go to a club, too young to gamble, too young to rent a car, but old enough to cut off their genitals and/or ‘change’their gender?[thinking emoji]-This is insanity #America.”
- Twitter users were upset by her comments, with some comments expressing that the rapper should not be concerned with the transgender community, as they are not worried about her.
- Others also brought up another transphobic remark she made while hosting America’s Best Dance Crew in 2009. Lil Mama advised Leiomy Maldonado, a transgender woman who was the head of the dance troupe “Vogue Evolution,” to “act like a lady” and “stop confusing voters.” The artist eventually went on to apologize to Maldonado for her comments, saying that her intentions were never to disrespect the transgender community.
As far as her most recent comments are concerned, Lil Mama has not issued an apology statement regarding the post and has since deleted her tweet.
