It started as a human scrabble game at a Missouri Christian school, and five teachers started drawing criticism on social media after forming a racial slur with large scrabble tiles.
What We Know:
- Five Missouri teachers are currently under investigation because they spelled out the word ‘Coon’. However, they insisted they didn’t mean to communicate any racism when they spelled out the word. The term is offensive and derogatory because, in 1830, a ministerial character is portrayed by a white actor in blackface. A coon is a black person who performs for a white person.
- First Coast News reported they were running around trying to play scrabble, but they didn’t have the R, and A said Pastor Raymond Horry, who has two children enrolled in the district. “I don’t believe it that five Caucasian teachers, not one of them knew that. Maybe one didn’t know it, maybe two didn’t know it, but all five didn’t know it?”
- There has been no word on what disciplinary action will be taken for the five Missouri teachers. Fox2Now reported that the Christian School District is spending time listening to those impacted, providing support to help repair relationships, and identifying necessary steps in moving forward together.
- The Christian school district released a statement generally expressing that the school is a house of God, and they are trying to end racism in the community. In a video, students are coming forward saying they are tired of the disrespect and telling their parents to do what they have to do.
The school district apologized to the community for the hurtful and offensive action and will keep the community updated on the situation.
