At an airport in New Jersey, Dr. Oz proved he’s more than a television personality.
What We Know:
- According to the Port Authority Police Department, a 60-year-old man collapsed at the Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey just after 11 p.m. on Monday evening. The elderly man collapsed near baggage claim, where police discovered he was not breathing and had no pulse.
- NBC News reported that Port Authority Police Officer Jeffrey Croissant called for backup and then started to perform CPR; that’s when Doctor Mehmet Oz rushed over to help the officer. “I performed CPR with the help of a Newark Port Authority police officer and cleared the man’s airway,” Oz tweeted. “Thankfully, the airport had a defibrillator nearby that we were able to use to save his life.”

- During the incident, Croissant recalled that he didn’t recognize the doctor saying, “everyone wears masks” and “what better help to have than a cardiac surgeon?” after realizing Oz was his help.
- Once the man began breathing on his own and was stabilized, he was taken to a hospital to be evaluated. The celebrity T.V. talk show host and former cardiothoracic surgeon called the incident “another critical reminder of how important it is to take the time to learn how to do CPR and use a defibrillator.”
- According to the CDC, cardiopulmonary resuscitation or CPR can double or triple someone’s chances of survival after a cardiac arrest by pushing down on a person’s chest to keep their blood pumping. It is recommended that people call 911 first to aid in the technique.
The Port Authority Police recognized Officer Croissant, backup officers Michael Bock, Matthew Vecchione, Daniel Olbrich, and Dr. Oz for their life-saving efforts.
