After being reported missing for several days, ex-NFL player Louis Nix III’s body has been found.
What We Know:
- According to the Daily Mail, Nix was reported missing from the Jacksonville Sherrif’s Office on Wednesday. He was last seen alive, leaving his father’s home in Jacksonville around 10 am on Tuesday.
- On Saturday, a dive team pulled Nix’s silver Hyundai out of a pond near his apartment complex on Broxton Bay Drive, prompting police in Jacksonville, Florida, to investigate the 29-year-old’s cause of death. Nix’s mother, Stephanie Wingfield, told multiple Jacksonville media outlets on Sunday that authorities confirmed her son’s death but haven’t been able to tell her how.
- Nix, who was also known as “Irish Chocolate” or “Big Lou,” was a former defensive lineman with an outstanding collegiate career during his time at the University of Note Dame. In 2014, he was drafted into the NFL by the Houston Texans but never played a game for the team due to knee injuries. He played four games in 2015 for the New York Giants and spent time practicing with the Washington Football Team and the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2016.
- His death comes months after being shot in the lung during an attempted robbery in December while he was putting air into his vehicle’s tires at a gas station half a mile from the pond where his car was found. Following the incident, Nix spent 10 days in the hospital and required surgery to remove his lung.
Former Notre Dame athlete and defensive end for the Detriot Lions, Romeo Okwara, described Nix as someone who “always wanted to put a smile on everyone’s face.”
