12 Year-Old Boy Fatally Shoots Intruder Who Tried to Rob Grandmother, Family Says

Late Saturday night, Goldsboro police responded to reports of a shooting that took place in the home of 73-year-old Linda Ellis around 12:34 am.

What We Know:

  • Two assailants forcibly entered the home of Linda Ellis and demanded money before they shot her in the leg. A 12-year-old juvenile described as Ellis’s grandson and family member Randolph Bunn were present inside the house as well. Bunn claims the attackers made him open the door and forced him onto the ground once they were in the house.
  • Unfortunately for the intruders, the juvenile inside the house was prepared and managed to fire back at the burglars. One of them, named Khalil Herring, was hit. Both burglars immediately fled the scene together.
  • Herring, one of the intruders, was sooner than later recovered by police at a nearby intersection suffering from a gunshot wound. At this time, it is unclear whether his partner dumped him or he’d been resting. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was then declared dead. The status of this investigation currently remains open as the whereabouts of Herring’s partner are still unknown.
  • Linda Ellis was taken to Wayne UNC Healthcare, where she remains in stable condition. Her great-niece Chiquita Coley comments that she can’t believe this would happen to Ellis. She continues and states, “I just couldn’t believe she been shot because she’s a good person. Why would somebody come into her house and do this?” An investigation is currently underway, and a motive behind this robbery has yet to be discovered. Any relationships the burglars had with the victims are also unclear as of late.

Goldsboro police assert that there will be no charges filed against the juvenile, whose name remains private.
