Goya Board of Directors Censures CEO for Comments About Election Fraud

Posted on January 29, 2021February 1, 2021 by Natalia Perez

The board directors of Goya, a Latino food brand, has reportedly voted to censure CEO Robert Unanue after he made baseless claims of voter fraud during the 2020 Presidential election.

What We Know:

  • On the day of President Biden’s Inauguration, Unanue appeared on Fox Business, where he made claims that Biden’swin was “unverified” and spoke of an upcoming war.
  • “I think this is mission accomplished, by the union, the partnership, the conglomerate of social media, big tech, big media and big government for ushering in the dawn of a new world order,” Unanue said. “There is a war coming, now that the president is leaving today, they’re still coming after the United States, the working class.”
  • First reported by the New York Post, the board’s decision was made Friday, which means that Unanue will no longer be able to speak to the media without prior permission from the board. Unanue confirmed to the Post that he would no longer be speaking publicly about politics or religion. However, he didn’t mention the board’s decision directly.

“Independently, I’ve made the decision to lower the temperature and walk away from speaking about politics and religion,” Unanue told the Post. “I realize it’s important because of the diverse views of the company and our market.”

  • The CEO previously made controversial remarks in July when speaking in praise of former President Trump, saying the country was “truly blessed” to have him president. Those comments resulted in a boycott from the public throughout social media and backlash from several Hispanic politicians.
  • On the other hand, Trump’s supporters encouraged a “buy-cott” in support of the company. A source who spoke with CNN Business said the comments “imperiled the future of the company” and that “sales growth is less than it was” before his comments.

Unanue’s claims of voter fraud stemmed from the former President’s own unfounded remarks, where he insists loads of fraudulent Biden ballots were added to the vote count after Election Day, ultimately inspiring the “Stop the Steal” riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, which left five people dead.
