The trailer for the expected sequel Coming 2 America is finally here.
What We Know:
- The new film marks the return of some cast members of the original 1988 classic film Coming to America, including Eddie Murphy as Akeem, Arsenio Hall as Semmi, and James Earl Jones as King Jaffe Joffer. Part two is expected to be delivered on Amazon Prime by March 5. Still, this holiday season did give fans of the original 1988 classic the trailer of the very anticipated sequel.
- In the trailer, Akeem, the recently crowned king of the fictionalized African country Zamunda, is determined to leave home to travel back to Queens, New York, to look for his long-lost son.
“You will be king, but the throne is passed to a male heir,” King Joffer tells his son Akeem in the clip. “Akeem, it appears you have a son … he must be found.”
- Murphy and Hall’s roles historically went from Zamunda to Queens in the original film, searching for a bride for Akeem. Akeem ultimately married Lisa McDowell, played by Shari Headley, who also emerges in the new trailer.
- While fans will, of course, enjoy seeing some familiar faces in the forthcoming sequel, the new film stars several famous newcomers, including Teyana Taylor, Wesley Snipes, and Leslie Jones.
- A continuation of Coming to America has been in the works for a long time. In 2019, Murphy announced on The Ellen Show that he had just completed filming the latest movie and that he could not be happier about how the movie turned out. Murphy also recognized the original film’s popularity and announced that the sequel does the 1988 classic fairness.
“We’ve gone above and beyond what anybody would think,” he said.
The film for Coming 2 America was written by Black-ish originator Kenya Barris, Barry W. Blaustein, and David Sheffield. Definitely a must-see movie!
