Whitney Houston’s new biopic “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” just found it’s lead actress.
What We Know:
- According to Variety Magazine, British actress Naomi Ackie is in the final stages of negotiating her role as legendary singer Whitney Houston for the upcoming musical biopic “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” by Sony productions.
- Ackie’s previous work can be seen in her role in Netflix’s “The End of the F***Ing World” series. She also appeared as Jannah in “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” and Steve McQueen’s anthology series “Small Axe.”
- The film will be directed by Stella Meghie, who directed “The Photograph” earlier this year, and written by “Bohemian Rhapsody” biopic author Anthony McCarten. Houston’s biopic will tell the story of her life and the inspiration behind some of her most iconic songs. It is set to be released by Thanksgiving of 2022.
- When asked about the decision to cast Ackie, film producer Clive Davis said, “Naomi Ackie’s screen test was so powerful, it sent shivers up my spine. Although Whitney’s incomparable vocals are used for all the songs, Naomi’s extraordinary acting range enables her to masterfully capture Whitney’s unique charm, star power, and, of course, her personal struggles. Naomi is the real deal, and I can’t imagine a better choice for this iconic role.”
We’re excited to see Ackie’s performance on the big screen.
