What We Know:

  • According to CBS, the Florida Gators preseason player of the year collapsed shortly after scoring a point during a match against the Florida State Seminoles. Following the collapse, Johnson received immediate medical attention by court-side medics and was rushed to a nearby hospital -Tallahassee Memorial Hospital.

  • After receiving initial treatment at the Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, Johnson was airlifted to the UF Health in Gainesville, Florida. Earlier in the week, he was placed in a medically induced coma but is now able to speak and communicate.
  • Currently, it is unclear if Johnson’s collapse was related to COVID-19. No one is able to confirm or deny if he has ever contracted the virus. But, according to USA TODAY Sports,  the Florida Gators have had to pause team activities sometime last month because of positive COVID-19 tests. The details of who contracted the virus cannot be released due to privacy laws.
  • On Tuesday, parents Nika and Marrecus Johnson shared a statement saying, “We feel so much love and support from everyone, and we’re beyond grateful for the care and attention that Keyontae has received throughout these past several days.”
