A goldfish with an astonishing weight of nine pounds has been found in a lake in South Carolina.
What We Know:
- The giant fish was discovered on Nov. 16 during a lake health research at Oak Grove Lake located east of Greenville in South Carolina when Scott Robinson conducted some electrofishing, a method of measuring the fish population’s health.
- Yet it was only on Dec. 7 that Greenville County Parks, Recreation & Tourism uploaded a picture of the oversized fish on social media.
“Anyone missing their goldfish? This 9lb goldfish was located in Oak Grove Lake during some current testing at our lakes. The work involved electrofishing, a technique of measuring the health of the fish population,” they said in the social media post.
- Ty Houck, the director of Greenways, Natural and Historic Resources for Greenville County Parks, stated that he is more than convinced the giant goldfish is only one of its kind living in the lake since just recently finishing a fish inventory of Oak Grove Lake and, being so shallow, another one of its sizes would be easy to spot.
- According to ABC News affiliate station, WLOS-TV, Officials stated that they aren’t sure how long it has been there. The giant goldfish was able to survive a nearly full draining of the lake while it was being aired recently and could have possibly survived a previous draining event as well.
- Although it is a big goldfish, According to Guinness World Record’s, the biggest goldfish measured 18.7 inches from snout to tail-fin end and was affirmed on March 24, 2003, in Hapert, The Netherlands.
- “The currently unnamed goldfish is obviously very happy and healthy at Oak Grove Lake, so we just said hello and put him back,” expressed Greenville County Parks, Recreation & Tourism on their social media page when questioned what they did with the goldfish.
Goldfish typically can fit in a glass bowl, but they can grow to enormous sizes in the wild.
