Trump Threatens Defense Veto Over Social Media Protections

President Donald Trump posted on Twitter Tuesday night threatening to veto a defense policy bill.

What We Know:

  • In the tweet, Trump talked about Section 230 of the 1996 Communications Decency Act, which protects companies who host messages from being sued by someone for a message hosted by the company. In the tweet, Trump calls Section 230 “a serious threat to our National Security & Election Integrity,” adding, “Therefore, if the very dangerous & unfair Section 230 is not completely terminated as part of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), I will be forced to unequivocally VETO the Bill.”
  • Trump has been vocal about his feelings on social media before, claiming social media is biased against conservative voices. According to AP News, “In October he signed an executive order directing executive branch agencies to ask independent rule-making agencies, including the Federal Communications Commission and the Federal Trade Commission, to study whether they can place new regulations on the companies.”
  • Trump has made claims against social media, claiming bias against conservative voices. Many of Trump’s claims of voter fraud after the election led to Twitter flagging posts saying, “This claim about election fraud is disputed.”
  • Tuesday’s threat comes as another potential roadblock in passing the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act. The argument over Section 230 comes after predictions that lawmakers were days from completing the $740.5 billion bill.

It is unclear if Trump will follow through with the treats or if the bill will go through. If the bill is not passed by January, the bill will need to be restated as the new Congress starts.
