Snapchat is taking their cut of the ‘spotlight’ by announcing their TikTok competitor. The in-app feature keeps a leg-up on the competition by offering an unexpected prize.
What We Know:
- Snapchat has released a new in-app feature that allows users to create TikTok-esque videos and editing. The platform incentivizes users to use the new feature, called Spotlight, by vowing to pay $1 million a day to the most entertaining Spotlight creations. The company’s giveaway plan is set to run until the end of this year.
- A blogpost from Snap Inc. stated, “We designed Spotlight to entertain our community while living up to Snapchat values, with our community’s wellbeing as a top priority. Spotlight content is moderated and doesn’t allow for public comments.” The statement also made a point to moderate the spread of misinformation, hate speech, or any other form of harassment.
- The Spotlight feature is now available in 11 countries. Users in the United States, Canada, Australia, the U.K., New Zealand, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, and France all have a chance to steal the spotlight! Anyone can submit their snaps but must be 16 years old or have a parent’s permission to win some content creating cash.
- Before this feature, snap-chatters were limited to seeing posts from only friends, subscriptions, or the discover feature. Now, Spotlight will keep user information private, but content accessible to Snapchat’s millions of daily users. The feature will also suggest other ‘spotlights’ according to Snapchat’s algorithm.
